Happy Cairns Tropical Pride 2017
Cairns Tropical Pride
What’s going on?
OUT! AFTER ELTON
Party on after the Elton John Concert with the first party of 2017 Cairns Tropical Pride in Meeting Room 6 of the Cairns Hilton. Don’t let the name put you off – it’s, in fact, the former Ribbons Niteclub, notorious as a 1990’s LGBT+ club space – now freshly renovated and ready to relive those glory days.
Party on with music from top local DJ’s and entertainment by top local drag queens and wear your sunglasses at night, your best Elton John glasses, to WIN.
SLIP ‘N SLIDE ART LAUNCH
Celebrate the launch of the Tropical Gaze Art Exhibition, one of the largest exhibitions of LGBT+ art in Australia, this year bigger and better than ever. Featuring an eclectic mix of artworks, styles and mediums, the exhibition showcases both recognised and emerging artists.
The night accommodates the high brow… and the low.
Artists will present multi-media biographical vignettes and there’ll be a drag show because honestly, when did you last see a drag show at a gala opening night in a leading gallery?
The night will offer the first opportunity to take in The Sealed Section, a retrospective display of HIV/AIDS art posters produced in Australia since the 1980’s and gathered from archives and collections across the nation by our Event Director for this one off exhibition.
Slip ‘n Slide takes place in Tank 4 of the magnificent Tanks Arts Centre, originally built during WWII to be camouflaged by the rainforest shroud of Mount Whitfield, and now a stand alone venue, and an integral component of the Heritage listed Cairns Botanic Gardens.
There’ll be canapes and a cash bar.
A HISTORY OF GAY CAIRNS
BY IAN BYFORD
Cairns Tropical Pride and Cairns City Library present a book display celebrating PASSING GLANCES: A History of Gay Cairns by Ian Byford, documenting the LGBT+ experience in Cairns from the naming of the new settlement after the supposed gay Governor of Queensland, Sir William Wellington Cairns up to the most recent gay law reforms on the eve of the book’s publication in 2017.
The display includes quotes from the book and enlargements of some of its many illustrations. Put in an entry to win a copy of the book while you’re there and of course, the book is available for loan at Cairns City Library.
CAIRNS TROPICAL PRIDE
CELEBRATE GAY PRIDE IN TROPICAL NORTH QUEENSLAND
Cairns Tropical Pride celebrates LGBT+ life in Tropical North Queensland, one of Australia’s most beautiful and welcoming destinations. Join us during our glorious tropical spring for a series of events starting with Out After Elton, a dance party following the Elton John concert on September 30 and culminating with the Pride weekend of October 6 – 8 with the Tropical Gaze Art Launch, then Queer Spring Break – a secluded tropical beach surrounded by world heritage rainforest comes alive with the party of the year, and finally our signature event, Pride Fair Day, the largest ever gathering of LGBT+ people in North Queensland.
FNQ Magazine the only gay lifestyle and travel magazine promoting people and places in our pink paradise – Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, Far North Queensland (hence our name FNQ!) While FNQ Magazine is produced in Far North Queensland our loyal readers come from all corners of Australia and the world with distribution points in Australia, New Zealand and North and South America. We pride ourselves on producing a quality publication which includes gay friendly accommodation, tours and attractions, where to eat, what’s happening, profiles on interesting men and women in our region as well as some good old fashion tropical inspired eye candy! The magazine is supported by a large highly engaged social media audience which allows us to reach even more people than just the 21,000 that read the magazine.
